Ready to take the next step in your sewing journey? If you’ve mastered the basics, like setting up your machine and sewing a straight stitch then this class is the perfect introduction to garment sewing!
Join us to create a stylish elasticated waist skirt. The Pocket Skirt by Peppermint Magazine (with Paper Theory Patterns) is a fantastic beginner-friendly project that will boost your confidence and have you walking away in something you made yourself. You will receive a copy of the pattern and pattern instructions.
You’ll learn essential garment-making skills, including:
📐 Taking measurements and cutting a pattern
📄 Following and using sewing pattern instructions
🪡 Creating an elasticated waistband casing
🧶 Threading and securing elastic for the perfect fit
✂️ Hemming for a polished finish
🧵 Finishing seams
🧷 Using an overlocker for durability and a professional touch
Over two 3-hour sessions, you’ll gain the skills to start sewing your own wardrobe, one stylish stitch at a time! Date TBC.
To enrol in this course it is recommended that you have either completed the First Stitches - A Beginners Guide To Sewing course or possess a basic working knowledge of using a sewing machine.
We offer a course kit that includes carefully selected fabric (with a few options to choose from), matching thread, and elastic, available for purchase.
If you’re missing essential sewing supplies, we also have a Sewing Gem Basic Sewing Kit available for purchase [here] to get you fully equipped and ready to sew!
However you may decide to bring your own supplies rather than purchase either or both The Sew Your Own Skirt Kit or The Beginners Sewing Kit. If you decide to bring your own supplies here’s what you’ll need:
- Fabric scissors
- Seam ripper
- Pins
- 3.8cm wide waistband elastic
- 40cm interfacing
- Matching thread
- Fabric (ideally a linen or equally stable fabric)
🚗 Parking
Street parking is available on the roads surrounding the building. Unfortunately we are unable to park on the forecourt as this is shared with other companies.
🧵Please note that access to the teaching space involves stairs. If you'd like assistance carrying your machine to the classroom, just let us know we’re happy to help.
