Sewing Club Podcast Ep. 8 The Pekka Jacket By Ready To Sew Patterns

The weather has cooled here in Brisbane, making it the perfect time to introduce this month's Sewing Club Podcast pattern: The Pekka Jacket from Ready To Sew Patterns. This jacket is an ideal pick for mid-season wear, due to its easy-to-wear, oversized design that can be made in a variety of fabrics. With its simple construction and easy fitting, it's perfectly suited for beginner sewists.

The Pekka Jacket is inspired by traditional Japanese clothing, offering two versions to choose from. Version 1 features a simple collar suitable for lightweight fabrics, while Version 2 sports a double collar, perfect for thicker, quilted materials.

I opted to sew a quilted version, and it’s turned out to be the comfiest addition to my wardrobe! It really does keep you warm and cosy. For those using a thicker fabric like mine, I recommend sewing with a larger seam allowance (I used 1.5cm) to make pressing the seams easier. There are some great design elements included in this jacket, my favourites are the panels and great oversized pockets, which are so spacious they can replace a bag. Your phone, lipstick, snacks—everything fits!

For my lining, I used a special fabric from Mood Fabrics in New York, making this jacket even more special and frequently worn. It’s always fun to have a surprise element like a flashy lining peek out!

The oversized fit simplifies the fitting process, but if you're notably short or tall (it's designed for someone 170cm tall), you might need to adjust the length of almost every pattern piece, except the sleeves. The simple construction and minimal fitting requirements make this a very beginner-friendly pattern.
