These pants are part of the Rome Collection, and fun fact — pietra means "stone" in Italian. It's not hard to picture yourself strolling through a sunny Roman piazza in a pair of breezy wide-leg Pietras. Kylie and I both made the shorts version this time around, but I’m already dreaming of a flowy version in a slinky fabric to channel those Italian chic vibes.

Behind the Brand: Chatting with Heather Lou
We had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Heather Lou, the creative powerhouse behind Closet Core Patterns. She shared some fantastic insights on how the brand has evolved, her favourite designs to sew, and the journey of turning a hobby into a successful business.
Both Kylie and I have sewn several Closet Core patterns over the years, they’re beautifully drafted, come together like a dream, and yes, they have lots of notches (which we love!). From beginner-friendly options to more advanced makes like the Jasika Blazer and Ginger Jeans, there’s always something to challenge and inspire.

Sewing Our Shorts
Making the Pietra Pants was a smooth, enjoyable experience for both of us. The vertical seams at the front create a lengthening effect, and the pocket detail adds just the right amount of interest.
We chose quite different fabrics, which gave our shorts totally looks. Mine was a lightweight chambray and I was able to stick closely to the pattern instructions. Kylie used a thicker twill, which was a bit bulky around the elasticated back waistband, so she cleverly skipped stitching through the elastic for a cleaner finish.

Pattern Hacks & Fabric Tips
If you're waist is a lot smaller than your hips then adding an invisible zipper and back darts could be a good option. This might also be a good idea with a heavier fabric. The choice of fabric really transforms the look and feel of these pants, so it’s all about the style you’re after. Play around and see what works!

Final Thoughts
The Pietra Pants are a solid all-rounder. With multiple leg styles and a flattering, wearable silhouette, it’s easy to see why they’re Closet Core's most popular patter of all time. Whether you're dressing them up or keeping it casual, they’re a versatile base you’ll reach for again and again.
