Sewing Gem UK!!
We’re super excited to announce that Sewing Gem will soon be launching in the UK, and will be run by the very skilled and knowledgeable Becky! For most of our Australian customers this will change very little, but what it does mean is that we will have an industry expert providing extra tips and advice for our Tips on Tuesday! How exciting is that?!
Here’s a little bit about Becky and her background in her own words...
My mum taught me how to sew when I was 5 years old on my grandmother's hand turned Singer, I didn’t get a chance to meet her, but I always loved the connection of sewing on the machine she made clothes for my Mum on. I still think it's a stunning machine (although I am a definite fan of electric pedals!).
This was my very first make.
When I was 17, I started working in a tailoring and alterations shop, before I went on to study Costume Construction at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. After years working as a freelance costume-maker and designer, I landed my dream job - making costumes for the Royal Ballet and Royal Opera at the Royal Opera House
, Covent Garden.
But, I'm sure I'm not alone when I say this past year hasn't really gone as expected! The Opera House's usually crazy busy workshop is silent and we wait! I certainly miss being able to make beautiful things with all the comforts of a fully equipped workroom - the right sleeveboard, the perfect needles, the best thread, my favourite pressing hams, my best shears! I know so many home and hobby sewers who, with so much more time spent in their homes and sewing rooms must be looking for lovely, professional-quality sewing tools.
I'm passionate about Sewing Gem UK starting up because it's the chance for me to use all my professional skills and knowledge to help people bring a professional sewing workroom right into their home and share the sewing commeradery online.
Meet the Sewing Gem UK team!
Well, you've already met me, Becky - I run Sewing Gem UK and handle most of the day-to-day aspects of the business. But I can't do it all alone! Sewing Gem UK is a family business, and I'd love to introduce the rest of the team/my family. My mum, Roberta, is logistics coordinator and stockroom manager. She'll be handling orders and making sure your beautiful sewing items reach you.
My dad, 'DIY' Derek, is our construction champion. He can usually be found whittling away, creating pressing tool prototypes, or putting up yet more shelves to house our gorgeous stock!
My brother James will be helping with I.T. and business support all the way from sunny Brisbane.
